Monday the story was that the city wants to take control of blighted properties. Isn't there a connection here? What if the city bought or took control of the abandoned buildings and partnered with Habitat for Humanity to repair them? After they were repaired, they could be sold to young families needing housing for a lower-than-market price. All that's missing is some imagination and leadership. Obviously, some of these buildings are beyond help, but targeting a neighborhood and identifying the potential rehabs could raise the property values for everyone and reclaim neighborhoods in decline. That sounds like a win-win situation to me! Jayne Dutra Medford Better than lightning Kudos to the Ashland Fire Department, the Forest Service and others who executed a controlled burn in the Ashland Watershed last week. The burn created smoke that everyone in the Rogue Valley had to breathe. Some can be really hard on people. I'd rather have professionals burn the forest than wait for a random lightning strike to do the same job in extreme conditions. Wildfires last year polluted the air and threatened firefighter safety far worse. Fire is a natural event in the Siskiyou Mountains. It always happens, sooner or later. Forest managers have a hard job, and a long way to go with fire. They deserve support. Jay Lininger Ashland Vote Tilley Case, Salmon Cindy Tilley Case, an incumbent with 20 years experience on the District 6 School Board, has a proven record of honesty, integrity and leadership. Cindy’s leadership style is confident and respectful to all. She continually strives by word and deed toward excellence in performance for the students and staff. Cathy Salmon has an earned respect within the community and would be a positive addition to the School Board. Her agenda is simple, “To work hard to do what’s best for kids.” She has a wealth of knowledge, history and heart of the community we live in. All qualities considered to be assets, not detriments. Cathy would bring honesty, integrity and trust to this position. Please join me and vote for Cindy Tilley Case and Cathy Salmon, School District 6 Board of Directors. Robin Adams, retired secretary to the superintendent and school board Central Point Self-restraint, please I certainly don't claim to know the legal details of Bureau of Land Management permitting procedures relative to mining, but here's what I do know. As an avid hunter, fisherman and hiker, one of the best aspects of living in the western U.S. is our abundant federal land, open to all. I don't find BLM or Forest Service regulations governing uses of these lands oppressive or inappropriate. Of course there should be reasonable controls over mining, and of course people should be charged a fee to graze livestock on federal lands. Also, I suggest a healthy dose of self-restraint when it comes to extreme anti-government rhetoric and displaying guns to intimidate people. Timothy McVeigh got fired up enough by anti-government sentiment in 1995 to kill 168 people in Oklahoma City and injure over 600 more. And remember that two of the fine folks who were defending Mr. Bundy's "right" to graze his cows for free on federal land in Nevada went on to kill two Las Vegas cops in June of 2014 in their attempt to start a "revolution."
