Patricia Kissinger, the volunteer who runs the Seventh Street facility that is often referred to as a soup kitchen, was simply fed up with people not cleaning up after themselves. "I closed today because the people were just getting out of hand," she said Monday. She said she's warned visitors to the kitchen for weeks that if they didn't stop leaving a mess each day, she would take a one-day break from serving them meals. The kitchen normally serves breakfast and lunch five days a week, Monday through Friday, and Kissinger is there every day. She said people haven't been doing things like busing their trays or putting away their cups. "It looked like a pigsty every day, inside and outside, and there's no excuse for that. None at all," she said. Kissinger just wants some consideration. "We work really hard there to get a good meal for them. All we expect them to do is to pick up after themselves, and that's not too much to ask," she said. The kitchen was scheduled to reopen Tuesday, but Kissinger said she wouldn't rule out a future one-day closure if it gets messy again.
