Illinois Valley breaks out of slump with runaway victory CAVE JUNCTION - Energy was in order for the Illinois Valley boys basketball team Tuesday night, and in senior post Daniel Houston, the Cougars tapped into a relative power plant. Beset by a two-game Skyline Conference losing skid, IV rode Houston's 26 points to a 69-49 home victory over Hidden Valley. The Cougars (15-5 overall, 9-2 Skyline) kept pace with Mazama (10-1 Skyline) and moved ahead of Rogue River (8-3) in the conference race. But more important to IV head coach Jeff Brimhall was seeing his team perform with the intensity it possessed in jumping to an 8-0 Skyline start. "We didn't have any energy last week at all," said Brimhall, whose squad was knocked from the Skyline perch thanks to a home loss to North Valley and a road defeat at Mazama. "Tonight, we just kept the energy up and played hard." The Cougars sped to a 16-9 lead through one quarter and earned a 37-22 advantage at the half. Houston riddled the Mustangs (7-13, 5-6) from everywhere, scoring down low, getting out in transition, canning baseline jumpers and even drilling a 3-pointer. "He was all over," Brimhall said. "And he hit the boards hard too." Senior guard Justin Graven augmented Houston's explosion with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Hidden Valley was paced by 15 points from Brock Richards, and Chris Jiron added 13. HIDDEN VALLEY (49) - Richards 15, Jiron 13, Biller 8, Sanders 4, Klug 3, Gotfried 3, Cushman 3, Tessen 0, Ogden 0.
