LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 22 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 22, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 22, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Education, not sports On Feb. 4, the Mail Tribune told us about a new $17.2 million softball stadium being built for the University of Oregon. The very next day, another article informed us that UO students were protesting yet another tuition hike, which would mean that “UO has raised tuition by more than 70 percent over the past decade.” I did some research concerning UO faculty salaries and football coaches’ salaries. It looks like the highest paid professors earn $200,100 per year, and the lowest paid football coach earns $300,000 yearly. How can the donors to this institution sleep at night, knowing that they could have donated their money to tuition offsets, so kids could afford to get an education without ending up deep in debt for years afterward, if they attempt higher education at all? Sorry, presidential candidates, but I doubt if you can fix what’s wrong with America if our college donors can’t get their priorities correct. How about eliminating tax deductions for sports donations, but allow academic donations to be a tax credit? We must realize that investing in education is far more important than sports! Will we, before it’s too late? Bob Bray Eagle Point Two huge countdowns First countdown: We've got about two decades to switch from being fossil fuel-centered to renewable energy-centered in order to stabilize our planet's climate. We have the technology right now. The longer we wait the more difficult and costly it becomes. The second countdown is in our Salem Legislature, where there are two weeks left to pass a Healthy Climate Bill (SB 1574) that fully starts the process of powering down fossil fuels in Oregon. If we can get it done, we will join the successes of California and British Columbia, and along with Washington, we will make up a Pacific Coast green alignment that shows the rest of the country what can be done. In passing this bill now, we give ourselves time to refine and improve as we transform, glad that solar and wind energies are more labor-intensive because we need jobs. The Healthy Climate Bill will reduce coal-fired electricity use in Oregon further each year with provisions benefiting low-income and distressed communities, job re-training and assistance in economic diversification. Call or email the governor and your legislators asking them to bring the bill to a yes vote now! Vicki Simpson Ashland Relief from winter Got the winter blues? Chase Medford Chinese exhibit excellent The Southern Oregon Historical Society has created an excellent exhibit representing Chinese history in Southern Oregon. The photos and stories are captivating and the items on display are museum quality. As I read the histories and looked at the photos, I gained a greater appreciation for the huge contribution and sacrifice that these people made while working and living in a country far from their homes and families.
