Virginia Wells Pierce, 89, of Medford, Ore., passed away in Bolingbroke, Ga the morning of Friday, June 12, 2015. Virginia was born in Crisp County, Ga. to the late Maggie Lizzie Stubbs Wells and James Franklin Wells. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Donald Earl Pierce; their sons, Michael Earl Pierce and Allan Craig Pierce; her brothers, Emerald Eugene Wells, Edward Franklin Wells, Jesse Ronald Wells, and James Donald Wells. Survivors include her sisters, Pansy Smith of Macon, Ga., Annette Rowland (Eugene) of Ft. Valley, Ga., and Helen Kear of Sevierville, Tenn.; brothers, Earl Wells (Polly) and Clyde Wells; sisters-in-law, Louise Wells Ball, Beth Wells, and Delores Wells, all of Pineview, Ga., Reva Wells of Cordele, Ga., and Betty Hoffmeister of Bremerton, Wash.; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved poodle, Sparky. Virginia was born in Crisp County, Ga. and attended Franklin School and later West Crisp School where she was on the varsity basketball team. After graduation she moved to Atlanta, Ga. and was employed by Western Union and Etna Insurance. She later moved to Portland, Ore. where she met and married Donald Pierce. Don’s job with Pacific Power Corporation required multiple relocations in several western states where Virginia was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife and later the U.S. Forest Service. Virginia and Don were very active in civic and religious activities. While Don served as Mayor of Yreka, Calif., Virginia was very active in her chapter of P.E.O. International and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, serving in multiple leadership positions. When Virginia was not outdoors participating in sports or gardening, she was indoors sewing, knitting, scrap booking, or preparing to throw a dinner party as she loved entertaining. She and Don were avid skiers, golfers and campers. After Don’s retirement, they traveled extensively with the Alpenlite Travel Club and later settled in Medford, Ore. Virginia recently said that she and Don “went everywhere and did everything they ever wanted to do.” Virginia moved to Macon, Ga. in September 2014 to be with her remaining family after losing Don. A Celebration of Virginia’s Life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford, Ore. Saturday, August 29, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Westminster Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Beta Sigma Phi International, PEO International, or Westminster Presbyterian Church in Medford, Ore.
