Central Ave. on April 5. Library staff will spend the month moving almost a quarter-million books, packing up and moving their offices, installing computer systems and setting up emergency evacuation plans and drills. Meghan O’Flaherty, manager, said there will be some fine-tuning left to do on the $14 million building, paid for with voter-approved bonds for new libraries countywide. Shelving still needs to be installed, the heating and air-conditioning system needs to be fine-tuned and new chairs and tables need to be counted and checked for nicks or other problems. O’Flaherty said some of the little problems include correcting a 34-inch wide opening for 36-inch wide filing cabinets. Advertisement Once all the work is completed, library staff will greet the public at a grand opening celebration at the new library from noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 4. The library will re-open for regular service the next day. The 80,000-square-foot building is five times the size of the old library. During the move-in period patrons won’t have access to all library services. Patrons of the main library will not be able to drop books off at the old Carnegie Library after Saturday. Books should be taken to the new book drop at the south entrance of the new library, just off the parking lot at 10th Street and Riverside Avenue. Also, for those reserving books, the library suggests patrons specify one of the other library branches in the county. Since the main library has 40 percent of the county’s collection of books, many volumes will be unavailable during the month. Books can be renewed by calling a branch library or going online to www.jcls.org . Reference questions should also be directed to another branch during the move. The library is looking for volunteers for the "book brigade," a symbolic event scheduled for April 4 in which books from the old library will be moved to the new library via a human chain crossing downtown.
