There's still a lot of work going on in the park, and many areas are fenced off. Any idea when it will open? — Jeff S., Medford Hawthorne Park's remodel has taken a lot longer than anybody imagined. It was supposed to open at the beginning of summer, and then city officials hoped it could open by the end of September. The last section of concrete has been poured around the large splash-pad area near the new playground at the corner of Jackson and Hawthorne streets. However, the asphalt hasn't been poured for the parking lot, though that should take only a couple of days. We checked in with Brian Sjothun, director of Medford Parks and Recreation. He said some areas of the park have been reseeded and he wants the grass to grow in a bit more prior to opening of the park. "I'll have a better idea regarding opening of the park toward the middle of next week," he said. The $1.65 million project is still within budget, Sjothun said. Improvements at the park include an entry plaza, gardens, a restroom, a play structure, field restoration, a picnic shelter and new walkways. The play area will be moved from the center of the park to a more visible location near Jackson and Hawthorne streets. The playground will have an area for children ages 2 to 5 and another area for children ages 5 to 12. Playcraft Systems of Grants Pass will provide the play equipment. A dog park with areas for small and large dogs will be featured in the center of the park. Just to the south of the playground is the splash pad. The Chamber of Medford/Jackson County Leadership Class of 2014-15 created a one-third-acre minipark next to Jackson Street that will appeal to children.
