Reject corporate greed How can we help struggling families? The working class used to be the economic engine of our country. To survive now, many parents must work at jobs that keep them just under full-time, with no benefits and little hope of improving their positions. Random scheduling of hours keeps them from arranging transportation and consistent child care that now equals the cost of tuition at a state college. Parental leave and paid sick days would save financially fragile families from having to choose between pay-day loan sharks, high-interest credit card debt or becoming homeless. Low wages force taxpayers to subsidize profitable corporations through food stamps and health care. It is not acceptable that one in five children in Oregon lives in poverty. We must all vote to support children and families and to reject corporate greed because we are stronger together! Carrie A. Johnson Grants Pass Turn around I am very, very concerned about the impact of Measure 97. Businesses with low margins like grocery stores have no option but to pass it on to people who can least afford the increase. There is no provision to exempt food. I deal with large corporations with small margins that already are figuring out how to pass it on to the consumer. It will not be the big Monsanto that bears the burden. It also makes a mockery of economic development. This state and Jackson County have spent millions trying to attract businesses. But other than having a beautiful state and a successful bottle bill, we are blemished with a score card that reads: second highest personal income tax in the U.S., a sub-par school graduation rate and now 2.5 percent tax on C-Corps. We might as well put up a sign at our state line that says, Turn Around. Buzz Thielemann Medford Firefighters endorsements Medford Fire Fighters Association PAC recently conducted interviews with several candidates running for local offices and endorse the following; Medford City Council: Dick Gordon Ward 1, Tim D'Alessandro Ward 2, Kay Brooks Ward 3 and John Anhorn, mayor. Jackson County Commissioner: Bob Strosser Position 2. These candidates are sensitive to the dangers firefighters face on the job and the need to protect their health and safety. Medford firefighters have a shared vision for Medford that goes well beyond public safety. Firefighters are also citizens and we also want a strong economy, good schools, safe streets and affordable health care. Medford Fire Fighters Association recognizes these candidates as qualified leaders and they have proven to us that they have the integrity and the vision to serve our community.
