Phoenix girls soccer coach, players top all-District 6 list By KRIS HENRY In recognition of its District 6 Conference championship, the Phoenix girls soccer team stole the show in recent all-league voting with four first-teamers and 10 selections overall. "We walked out of the room with smiles on our faces," Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer said of the all-league meeting. The Pirates (12-2-2) easily claimed the District 6 crown and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs before dropping a 1-0 shootout at Philomath. Leading the charge for Phoenix were first-team selections Tara Curtis, Jennifer Bones, Lisa Perry and Annie Kulig. While Bones, Perry and Kulig were busy leading the Pirates to a league-best 50 goals scored, Curtis minded the net as goalkeeper with seven shutouts and a league-low 14 goals allowed. Curtis' goals-against average over the past two seasons was a paltry 0.875. "I'm real happy for all the kids, but especially for someone like Tara," said Sporrer, who was selected coach of the year. "We felt pretty strong that she was more than an honorable mention goalkeeper last year and it was nice for her to be recognized so highly this year. "Statistically, she was clearly above the other keepers. She is a big part of why we've had success the past two years." Rounding out the first-team selections were Rogue River's Erica Galer and Casey Pete; St. Mary's freshman Emily Smith; North Valley's Malloree Enoch and Hannah Smyth; Dena Young of Mazama; and Henley's Cathy Mayer. Mayer, Young and Enoch were unanimous selections, with Young capturing player of the year honors thanks to her league-leading 29 goals. "Dena's history of success weighs heavily in that," Sporrer said. "She has meant a lot to the Mazama program. That program is going to be a lot different without her." Sporrer credited his players for his selection as coach of the year. "That's based on the kids, that's not based on me. It goes hand-in-hand," the coach said. "If the kids do well, they assume you must be doing something. Those awards directly reflect back to the kids." Phoenix senior defender Jessica Montgomery was selected to the second team, while five other Pirates earned honorable mention. Rogue River senior Alison Marland also was selected to the second team, along with Margo Chamberlain and Lindsay Cruickshank of St. Mary's.
