Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 1, 2006 %%$$cutline$$%% DUII suspect jailed after injury crash A suspected drunken driver faces felony assault charges for injuring an elderly couple Thursday. Rick Gene Markel, 48, appeared Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of second- and fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest and driving under the influence of intoxicants. Markel was arrested Thursday after running a west Medford stop sign and smashing into a car driven by 79-year-old Douglas McKee, of Phoenix. McKee’s wife, 78-year-old Barbara McKee, remained in critical condition Friday at Providence Medford Medical Center. She suffered internal injuries and cuts, said Medford police Detective Terry Newell. Douglas McKee was listed in good condition at Providence. Markel was not injured when his 1978 full-sized Ford pickup struck the 2003 Buick sedan’s passenger side at the intersection of Fourth and Fir streets at about 6:23 p.m., said Medford police officer Dyan Rodreick. Markel also was charged with assaulting an officer while resisting arrest. Markel’s passenger, 37-year-old Melissa Doerner, of the 1500 block of Johnson Street, Medford, fled the crash scene and was taken into custody at Second and Grape streets. She was cited for failure to perform the duties of a witness and taken to the county’s sobering center, Rodreick said. She was not injured. Markel, who lists no address, previously has served jail time for possession of cocaine. He also pleaded guilty to a 2003 DUII and completed a diversion program last year.
