MAJOR LEAGUES Giants' rotation has lots of questions Comment By San Jose Mercury News MailTribune.com By San Jose Mercury News Posted Feb. 7, 2015 @ 8:45 pm By San Jose Mercury News Posted Feb. 7, 2015 @ 8:45 pm » Social News SAN FRANCISCO — While the Giants have plenty of pitchers to make up a starting rotation, questions abound about whether it will be a formidable enough rotation to spearhead another drive to the postseason. Matt Cain and Tim Hudson are coming off surgeries. Ace Madison Bumgarner is coming off 270 innings. Tim Lincecum is coming off a year in which he was pretty much a non-factor in October. Ryan Vogelsong and Jake Peavy are fine, but they’re 37 and 33, respectively, and coming off postseasons in which they weren’t terribly proficient. But aside from Hudson, who may be touch-and-go to be ready at the start of the season, the Giants were looking and sounding happy about where things stand on Feb. 6, 12 days before the start of spring training. Nobody was looking and sounding happier than Matt Cain Friday as players arrived for Saturday’s Giants FanFest at AT&T Park. The veteran right-hander, who made only 15 starts last year and was shut down at the All-Star break, said his progress following elbow surgery in early August and ankle surgery in late September has been terrific. “It’s coming along really, really well — I feel like I’m 18 again,” Cain said. “I almost see it as a new beginning for me. I feel really good right now. I feel as good as when I first signed with these guys.” At this point, Cain believes he’ll be ready to go by the start of the season and manager Bruce Bochy believes it, too. “He looks like he’s going to be on schedule, and he’s very determined to get back and be the pitcher that he is,” Bochy said. “I’ve gotten nothing but great news on his rehab.” Cain, who began throwing in December, was scheduled to throw his second bullpen off a mound Friday under the watchful eye of pitching coach Dave Righetti and trainer Dave Groeschner. Cain is only throwing at 60-70 percent effort, but he once again has range of motion and he’s trying to re-hone his mechanics after the longest layoff of his major-league career. Just getting on the mound this past week was an eerie feeling. “I was definitely a little giddy,” he said. “I had to tone it back a little bit. Groeschner definitely got on me and told me, ‘We’ve got a long time right now. Just take it easy and let it work.’ ” Righetti noted that the ankle surgery to remove a bone spur was no small thing, either. “We never talked about it, but I don’t know many years he pitched with that thing in his foot,” Righetti said. “It was a real pain. Then the elbow, it just gradually got worse and worse to the point where he couldn’t straight it out. So hopefully fixing those two things will add up to something really positive in the spring and carry over into the season.” Hudson, meanwhile, had surgery Jan. 6 to remove bone spurs from the right ankle he had surgically repaired in 2013 following a major fracture he incurred on a first base coverage play while with Atlanta. Recovery time is eight weeks, meaning Hudson will be pushing it to be ready for the first week of April. For now, he’s optimistic. “Whether that’s me pitching in two games or five in spring training, I don’t really don’t know,” he said. “For me, it’s more of an arm thing now than an ankle thing. I’ve got to get my arm in shape and get ready to go. I’m 2 1/2 to 3 weeks behind where I normally would be from a throwing standpoint.” Hudson, who said he’s leaning toward 2015 being his final season, admitted his ankle flared up throughout last season and probably had an impact on the hip issue he had late in the 2014 season. As for Bumgarner, there has been much debate about whether the 270-inning load he took on last season will have a hangover effect this season. But the World Series MVP said he’s not worried whatsoever. “I felt great during the entire postseason, but there’s so much adrenalin going through your body during the playoffs, it’d be hard to recognize (arm fatigue) if you did,” he said. “But then I felt great the whole offseason, got plenty of time to recover, and I feel great now. “I started working out and throwing the same time I always do, around Jan. 1, so I’m just treating it like a normal offseason.” By San Jose Mercury News MailTribune.com By San Jose Mercury News Posted Feb. 7, 2015 @ 8:45 pm » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football Fantasy Football Outlook for Jets Stars Feb. 7, 2015 at 4:30 am Super Bowl Fantasy Review and Highlights Feb. 2, 2015 at 10:00 am Top Fantasy Players, Projections for Patriots vs. Seahawks Jan. 31, 2015 at 8:39 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Titans Stars Jan. 30, 2015 at 10:37 am 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook for Buccaneers Stars Jan. 28, 2015 at 7:00 am DraftKings Fantasy Pro Bowl, Super Bowl Lineup Jan. 24, 2015 at 11:37 am calendar Connect with MailTribune.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services Home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Announcements Obituaries Story ideas Since you asked Alerts Email Alerts RSS Feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
