Driver gets prison for rolling assault By Chris Bristol MailTribune.com By Chris Bristol Posted Dec. 19, 2000 @ 2:00 am Updated Dec 17, 2010 at 7:42 AM By Chris Bristol Posted Dec. 19, 2000 @ 2:00 am Updated Dec 17, 2010 at 7:42 AM » Social News A drug-addled motorist who deliberately rammed a Jackson County sheriff's deputy patrol car and then gave chase when the surprised officer drove off was sentenced Monday to two years in prison. Jerry Morava, 31, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted first-degree assault for the Jan. 26 attack on Antelope Road near White City. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants. In exchange, prosecutors dropped charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder, first-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest and reckless endangerment. Deputy District Attorney Allan Smith said blood tests showed the presence of methamphetamine and marijuana in Morava's system. Meth is a toxic stimulant that sometimes causes violent, paranoid behavior. He'd been on a meth run for seven days and was very paranoid, Smith said. He told the officers he had to kill them before they assassinated him. Smith gave the following account of the incident: At about 10:45 a.m. Jan. 26, sheriff's deputy Ron Walch was on patrol in the White City area when Morava passed him on Antelope Road, heading in the opposite direction. The deputy noticed that Morava was staring at him as they passed and glanced in his rear-view mirror — — only to see Morava's car, a Honda coupe, suddenly come to a stop in the middle of the road. The deputy began to turn around at the nearby intersection of Fourth Street and Antelope to see what the problem was. Morava, meanwhile, pulled a U-turn and began driving toward the deputy's car. Walch, thinking Morava simply wanted to talk about something, began slowly backing up so he wouldn't block the intersection. At that point, the deputy realized (Morava) was approaching at a high rate of speed, directly at him, Smith said. Walch narrowly avoided a collision by cranking his wheel over. Morava pursued Walch across the street, striking the deputy's patrol car on the front-passenger quarter panel. Walch, realizing he was under attack, took off down Antelope Road with Morava in pursuit. Morava's damaged car soon broke down. Walch circled back, waited for backup and arrested Morava after a protracted struggle. As part of his sentence, Morava was placed on three years of post-prison supervision, fined $3,000 and ordered to pay more than $2,800 restitution for the damage to the deputy's car. Morava told investigators a day after the attack he was grateful Walch didn't shoot him. Walch is now a detective. I know he'd have been right to shoot, Morava said.
