Hesia's all-around game stymies Pirates KLAMATH FALLS - Levell Hesia contributed on both ends of the court during fourth-ranked Mazama's 71-46 victory over Phoenix in Skyline Conference boys basketball Tuesday. The jack rabbit-quick Viking junior guard bombed in a game-high 32 points and helped a defensive effort that limited the Pirates to 16 second-half points. Mazama (10-2, 3-1 Skyline) held a modest 36-30 halftime lead. "We were still on the bus trip back from IV in the first half," said Mazama coach Randy Rose, whose squad was beaten in overtime by Illinois Valley on Friday. "We picked up our defensive intensity in the second half." Hesia was a sizzling 11 of 14 from the field in the game, with 18 points coming in the first half. But his second-half performance on defense sparked the Vikings when he held Brett Ellis to one point after the Pirates' sophomore guard scored 11 before the break. "As good as Levell is offensively, he can be just as good on defense," said Rose. "In the second half, he initiated our defense. We can score points. We just have to stop teams." The Vikings received a strong effort from junior post Eric Brosterhous, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds. "We needed to get our inside game going," said Rose. "We actually ran some offense in the second half geared for him (Brosterhous)." Phoenix junior Brady Rhodes scored a team-high 13 points and sophomore wing Martin Gonzalez added 12. Phoenix fell to 1-2 in the Skyline and 5-8 overall. PHOENIX (46) - Smith 2, Crockett 4, Barrett 0, Kenyon 0, Jimenez 0, Rhodes 13, Ellis 12, Lacy 3, Gonzalez 12, Lockett 0. Totals: 20-56 3-8 46.
