Knowles, after 89 years of life, passed away July 26, 2015, surrounded by family in the home of one of his sons. George was the youngest of six children and spent many of his early years in Southern Oregon. He graduated from Prospect High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After the war, he took advantage of the GI Bill and graduated with a degree in Forest Engineering from Oregon State. His career in the forest industry included working for Ellingson Lumber Company in Klamath Falls and Baker; a two-year stint appraising and valuing land and timber for the Department of Revenue in Salem; and 13 years with the Industrial Forestry Association in Medford and Portland. Married in 1958 to Mary Kay Gallagher, who preceded him in death in 1986, he was a good man and a good father to his children, Steve Wallaert, Kelly Wallaert, Richard Wallaert, Lisa Farmer, and Mike Knowles. In addition to his children, he is also survived by his sister, Edna Street, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. At his request, George's cremated remains will be interred in a private ceremony in Trail, Ore., alongside his mother, who died when he was three, and one of his brothers, who died as a teenager.
