HORSE RACING Jockey Samuels adds four more wins GRANTS PASS — Jockey Jake Samuels raced to four victories and Matthew Werner-Hagerty picked up three — including the featured Don Jackson Memorial — at Grants Pass Downs on Saturday. Samuels won the first, second, third and fifth races, with GPD's leading trainer Debora Ferguson claiming a share of his success in the first and fifth. Samuels leads all jockeys with 13 victories, while Ferguson owns eight wins. Werner-Hagerty secured the fourth, sixth and seventh races. His triumph in the Don Jackson Memorial came atop Captain Gavel, which also won it last year. Captain Gavel's owner and assistant trainer is Ashland's Margie Cantrell, who was the last person to train for Jackson, the longtime local horseman who passed away in 2012. The entire race day was in his honor. Chris Daley earned his first victory as a trainer with Werner-Hagerty, Cantrell and Captain Gavel, which has three wins in four lifetime starts at GPD. The racing season wraps up today with Fan Appreciation Day, when prizes will be awarded after each of the eight races. Gates open at noon with a post time of 1 p.m. Headlining the action is the Grants Pass Derby, the seventh race for 3-year-old quarter horses with a $7,300 purse. The Bob Barney Best Of All Breed Stakes (race No. 4) will be a 600-yard mixed-breed race. The last competition of the day — the Oregon HBPA Au Revoir Stakes — goes 1 1/16 miles.
