On Nov. 15 police arrested a man who claimed to be Richard Adam Stephens, 68, of Wolf Creek. He was charged with first-degree sexual abuse and unlawful sexual penetration for allegedly abusing a 7-year-old girl he knew. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $3 million bail. Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said officers discovered that the man had given a false name. He was really Wendell Eugene Clemens, 72, who was wanted in Columbia County on two counts of first- degree sodomy, four counts of first-degree sexual abuse, a count of first-degree sexual penetration and a count of second-degree sodomy. Those charges stemmed from an alleged incident in 1996. Clemens, who lived in the 1000 block of Ellendale Drive, had been on the run for six years, Moran said. After confirming Clemens’ identity with fingerprints, police added the 1996 charges. Clemens will be sent to St. Helens to face those charges. Stephens is allegedly is a friend of Clemens and may have known Clemens was using his name, Moran said. Therefore, Clemens doesn’t face identity theft charges at this time, he said.
