Singler open to remaining in OKC Restricted free agent has stamp of approval from Thunder GM Comment By Kris Henry Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Posted May. 7, 2015 at 2:00 AM By Kris Henry Mail Tribune Posted May. 7, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Once his weekend obligations are met for the ninth annual Singler Southern Oregon Open, Medford’s Kyle Singler plans to make a scheduled trip to Oakland, Calif., before returning to Oklahoma City for a meeting with newly hired Thunder head coach Billy Donovan. Singler is a restricted free agent after completing his initial three-year contract this past season, meaning the Thunder have the right to match any offer he potentially may receive. “The Thunder have expressed that they’re wanting to keep me,” the versatile 6-foot-8 forward said Wednesday. “Whether teams get involved or not, it shouldn’t be an issue.” Thunder General Manager Sam Presti expressed interest this week in signing Singler to a new deal during the offseason as a key piece of the puzzle for an Oklahoma City team that was beset by injuries in 2014-15 but expects to contend for an NBA title next season. “Finding a player in free agency that can shoot close to 40 percent from the 3-point line over the course of a season, embrace various roles and stand as one of your most fundamental players at 6-9 is unlikely when over the cap and tax," Presti told The Oklahoman. "Therefore, we are hopeful we will be able to keep working with him.” All of that seems fine with Singler, who admitted to initial shock over being traded with 10 minutes to go in this year’s trading deadline. Singler was averaging 7.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists with the Detroit Pistons — starting in 150 of 218 career games there — before being shipped to Oklahoma City. “Being traded was tough for me,” he said. “I had a lot of relationships and ties in Detroit.” The opportunity to join the Thunder as it looked to make a push toward the NBA playoffs proved exciting, it just unfortunately didn’t work out the way Singler had hoped. It was expected that he would back up all-star forward Kevin Durant, but a lingering foot injury kept him out of the lineup entirely and landed Singler in the starting role from Day 1 and having to adjust on the fly for then-head coach Scott Brooks. As the weeks wore on, the Thunder lost more pieces to their expected rotation and they simply were never able to field the kind of team Presti had anticipated when he made his bold deadline deals to complement the likes of Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka. “The reason why I’m excited to go back there is the pieces are in place to win an NBA championship,” said Singler, who was the Most Outstanding Player for Duke when it won the NCAA title in 2010. “We have great talent on that team, we have a new coach and with that will bring a new energy to the team so the odds of being successful are high.” Singler also said he looks forward to continuing to build relationships with his Thunder teammates, as well as show his true colors as a player who was on the 2013 NBA All-Rookie second team and served as a dependable contributor in Detroit. “You look at what I did there (in Oklahoma City),” said Singler, “it’s probably not glaring of success or even production on my part but it was a tough transition for me. Coming in I didn’t really know what to expect and what my role was going to be. I never had a chance to get too comfortable with certain things, but I’m confident in my skills as a basketball player. Knowing the guys coming back on the team, I feel comfortable being able to produce and be a player that can help the team win.” With his combined numbers in Detroit and Oklahoma City, Singler averaged six points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in nearly 22 minutes this past season. His shot attempts were essentially cut in half while with the Thunder, although he did average a career-best 39.8 percent from 3-point range. “I felt bad that we weren’t able to make the playoffs,” said Singler, who was on the cusp of that in Detroit and fell short by one game in Oklahoma City. “I take responsibility on that for my part because I take pride in my play and of being able to help the team win and it just wasn’t there and wasn’t enough. I was disappointed when the season ended but I know coming back, guys will be healthy and we’ll have a team that is a winning basketball team.” Singler said he’s also excited about the prospects of working with Donovan, whom he knows primarily from his coaching pedigree at Florida, where he won NCAA titles in 2006 and ‘07, as well as his hard-nosed collegiate career at Providence. “He’s got ties to winning teams so you know he knows the game,” said Singler, “and he’s a competitor, so I’m excited about that.
