No cause had been found yet for the fire, which caused massive damage to a 2,400-square-foot home with an attached garage at 6920 Rapp Lane. People started calling 9-1-1 to report the burning house about 11:30 p.m., Jackson County Fire District No. 5 Division Chief Darin Wellburn said. As soon as District 5 crews rolled out of their station on South Pacific Highway, they could see the bluff-top home blazing like a beacon. They immediately triggered a second alarm to call for additional firefighters, he said. Crews from Ashland, Phoenix and Medford joined in the fight. An Oregon Department of Forestry fire truck patrolled the area to watch for spreading wildland fires. A neighbor also turned on irrigation sprinklers in an adjoining field so sparks wouldn’t drift onto dry grass. Advertisement Wellburn said the fire had roared through the home’s first floor and spread to the second story by the time crews arrived. Firefighters said they first attacked the fire from the front of the house, then moved around back to send water streaming through windows. Firefighters said several dogs were penned on a porch at the house. They were freed by firefighters and taken to safety at a neighbor’s home. Three water-hauling tenders shuttled water from hydrants in the Parkside Apartment complex at 220 W. Rapp Lane. They dumped the water into collapsible plastic "ponds" that crews set up at the foot of the burning home’s long driveway. Submersible pumps dropped into the ponds sent water to the fire. By 3 a.m., the fire was out and most crews headed back to the station. A few firefighters remained overnight to monitor the smoldering house, officials said. No one was home at the time of the fire. The home’s residents stopped by during the night, but they weren’t identified in preliminary fire district reports.
