Key plays of Super Bowl 52: Eagles 41, Patriots 33 Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz scores past New England Patriots free safety Devin McCourty during the second half of the NFL Super Bowl 52 football game Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, in Minneapolis. The Associated Press Sunday Feb 4, 2018 at 4:06 PM Feb 4, 2018 at 7:29 PM A look at the key plays in each quarter of Super Bowl 52. Gatehouse Media First Quarter 8:30 — Philadelphia faced second and goal from the New England 2 when Eagles tight end Zach Ertz committed a false start penalty to put Philadelphia back to the 7. The play ended the Eagles' momentum on the drive, and they settled for a field goal and a 3-0 lead. 4:25 — After letting Tom Brady and the Patriots go down the field, almost at will, the Eagles defense came up with a big stop. Looking at third and 3 from the Philadelphia 8, Brady's pass to Rob Gronkowski was broken up and New England settled for a field goal of its own to tie the game 3-3. 3:31 — On the second play of the ensuing drive, LaGarrette Blount ran through the Patriots defense, collecting 36 yards. The play showed the Eagles' ability to run the ball effectively. On the next play, Nick Foles went over the top to connect with Alshon Jeffries for a 34-yard score and a 9-3 lead. Second Quarter 14:13 — A bad snap on a 26-yard field goal attempt caused Patriots holder Ryan Allen to mishandle the ball. Stephen Gostkowski had to pause as he approached, and ended up pulling the kick to the left. The ball bounced off the upright and fell back onto the field to keep the score 9-3. 9:45 — After going three-and-out on their previous possession, the Eagles faced third-and-7 at their own 38. Foles found Ertz down the middle of the field for a 19-yard gain. Three plays later, Blount fought through the defense on a 21-yard score to stretch Philadelphia's lead to 15-3. 5:55 — Foles' pass to Jeffries down the right sideline was nearly a catch. The Philadelphia receiver had the ball pinned against his body for a moment, then lost control. He tipped the ball in the air, and it was intercepted by Duron Harmon. New England took over at its own 10 and drove 90 yards in fewer than 3 minutes, capped by a 26-yard James White run. The drive narrowed the lead to 15-12 with just more than 2 minutes remaining in the half. 1:46 — With time running out in the half, Nick Foles flipped a short, third-down pass to Corey Clement, who picked up the first down and more. The running back sliced through the New England defense and set up Philadelphia inside the Patriots 10. Four plays later, the Eagles went for it on fourth-and-goal from the 2. Clement took the direct snap and ran to the left before flipping the ball to tight end Trey Burton on a reverse. Burton then threw the ball to Foles, who was wide open in the right side of the end zone. Third Quarter 12:15 — Brady came out for the second half on fire. The Patriots quarterback threw for 68 yards and capped the drive with a touchdown pass, his first of the game, on a 5-yard dart to Gronkowski to pull the Patriots back within 3 at 22-19. 7:18 — Foles and the Eagles have an answer. The Philadelphia quarterback threw a perfect pass into the end zone, just outside the reach of two New England defenders for a 22-yard touchdown to extend the lead back to two scores. After converting three more times on this drive, the Eagles are 8-of-11 converting on third down plays. 3:55 — Another touchdown pass from Brady put the New England quarterback over 400 yards for the game. The 26-yard strike to Chris Hogan also brought the Patriots back within a score. With the exception of the 34 seconds they had the ball before halftime, the Patriots have scored on every possession since missing a field goal with 11:58 remaining in the second quarter. Fourth Quarter 15:00 — The Patriots defense came up with the first stop of the second half, holding the Eagles on third-and-3 as Foles completed a pass to Nelson Agholor in the flat, but lost eight yards after a quick tackle. A Jake Elliott 42-yard field goal stretched the lead to six points, but the play kept the Patriots within a score at 32-26. 9:22 — Brady hits Gronkowski for another TD, this time from four yards and the Patriots had their first lead of the game at 33-32. 5:39 — With Brady and the Patriots rolling on offense, Eagles coach Doug Pederson rolled the dice and went for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 45. The gamble paid off as Foles found Ertz for a 2-yard gain, and Philadelphia milked seven minutes off the clock on the drive. A two-point conversion failed, and the Eagles lead was 38-33. 2:16 — Brady had the ball knocked away as he was sacked by Brandon Graham. Derek Barnett recovered the loose ball and the Eagles took possession. Four plays later, Philadelphia extended its lead to 41-33 with a 46-yard Elliott field goal. 0:09 — Brady's Hail Mary from the Philadelphia 49 fell harmlessly to the turf in the end zone, and the Eagles earned their first Super Bowl win.
