Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 7, 2005 Pedestrian’s death along Highway 62 investigated By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune Police continue their investigation to determine whether a homeless man was intoxicated when hit by a car and killed trying to cross Highway 62 late Wednesday. Police hope to speak to one driver in particular to piece together what happened. Jaron Blaine Wells, 35, and his dog both died after they were struck on an unlit portion of the highway north of Poplar Drive. Police expect to file no charges against the driver whose truck hit Wells, 53-year-old Robert Gresham Rogers, of Central Point, said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran. Rogers’ full-size Dodge Ram pickup struck Wells and his black Labrador mix at about 7:31 p.m. Advertisement A long-time Medford resident, Wells was known to camp in an area around Delta Waters Road and Lear Way, Moran said. He was wearing dark clothing and carrying a large backpack, which contained personal belongings when he was hit, Moran said. Wells died at the scene, and the dog died shortly after police arrived. Rogers told police he didn’t see Wells until it was too late. Rogers was given field sobriety tests, but police investigators found no indication he was impaired, Moran said. Detectives do believe Wells may have been intoxicated and are awaiting results for lab tests of his blood, Moran said. With convictions for robbery, assault, theft and drug possession, Wells was well-known to police, Moran said. The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review. Medford police are still looking for the driver of a silver sedan that narrowly missed Wells while driving in the highway’s left lane. Rogers said the car turned from Poplar onto the highway shortly before passing Wells. The sedan’s driver — believed to be female — may have information that can assist detectives, Moran said. Anyone with information is asked to call police Detective Mike Budreau at 774-2232.
