North Valley rides goal by Vial to 1-0 win over Mazama MERLIN -- Sophomore fullback Galin Vial scored her first varsity goal and North Valley put the clamps on high-scoring Mazama forward Dena Young as the Knights squeaked out a 1-0 District 6 victory over the Vikings on Saturday. Just two minutes into the game, Galin pushed past the midfield line, took a drop-back pass from Jessica Friedman and hit the ball into the net from 25 yards out. Led by midfielders Hannah Smyth and Andee Trader and stopper Anna Marroquin, North Valley (5-3-2) dominated the game from the midfield. The Knights got off 16 shots to the Vikings' eight but were stymied by Mazama keeper Yolanda Hart. "We owned the midfield but she (Hart) kept them in it," North Valley coach Gary Enoch said. "We stepped it up and played possession soccer. By the end of the match the Mazama kids were walking." The Knights double-teamed Young much of the way. Kelsey McKee played support defense on Young and picked up several loose balls. Sophomore Malloree Enoch and senior Marissa Baurer combined for the shutout in goal. ROGUE RIVER 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 1 -- At Rogue River, Rachel Hinze scored before Hidden Valley blinked and the Chieftains (7-3) pulled within two points of District 6-leading Phoenix. Hinze stole the opening kickoff and scored five seconds into the contest to give Rogue River a 1-0 lead. Hidden Valley's Alyson Elledge tied the game in the 11th minute, only to have Allison Bailey regain the lead for Rogue River in the 19th minute off a corner kick by Jaclyn Smith. Hinze nearly notched her second goal of the game in the second half, only to have her shot deflect off the corner post and allow for a rebound goal by Casey Pete. ST. MARY'S 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 -- Margo Chamberlain scored twice and assisted on another goal in leading St. Mary's to the District 6 win. Chamberlain put the Crusaders up 1-0 in the 18th minute off an assist by Shasta BeArmond. Chamberlain added her second goal at the 45th minute off a pass from Nellie Barnard, then assisted Leah Sawyer's goal two minutes later for a 3-0 lead. Gabi Eichmann took a pass from Heather Greiss and slipped a shot past Annie Maurer to help Illinois Valley trim its deficit.
