The sheriff's department will participate in National Drug Take Back Day, overseen by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. DEA has hosted two such events a year. During the spring event, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska residents turned in more than 31,700 pounds of expired or unused medications, which have since been disposed of. Over the past four years, 4.1 million pounds of medications have been forked over across the U.S. Throwing the medicines away or flushing them can create environmental hazards and storing them can increase the risk. Drop boxes will be available at the department's headquarters, 5179 Crater Lake Highway, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Accepted items include over-the-counter medications, samples, ointments and liquid medications. Intravenous solutions, syringes, chemotherapy medications and medical waste will not be accepted.
