The festival fuses historic and modern skills while paying homage to nature and welcoming the return of spring. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the family event includes edged-weapon and heavy-athletics contests, simulated combat, beard and braid contests, a costume contest, maypole dancing, storytelling, activities for youth and children, ancient skills demonstrations, entertainment and drum circles. Festivities will take place at the Evans Valley Education and Community Center, 8205 E. Evans Creek Road, formerly the Evans Valley Elementary School. Admission costs $7 for adults, $5 for youth and is free for children 10 and younger. The heavy-athletics games include tossing of the Braemar Stone, an early version of the shot put with rocks weighing up to 30 pounds, and the caber, a long, wooden pole launched upward, end-over-end. The festival also promises demonstrations of cob building, blacksmithing, fire building, woodcarving and chain-saw art, as well as presentations from the Society of Creative Anachronism, a group that celebrates the Middle Ages by donning real armor and doing battle. Musical guests include the Jefferson Pipe Band, Circle of Stone, Hamfist, and Kevin Carr and friends. The Curtain Climbers Aerial Dance Company, Coyote Rising Puppet Troupe and the Rogue River Vaulters also will perform. For information, call 541-973-1971 or see www.elkmountaingames.com .
