Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Improvement The developm ent of an integrated and com prehensive intelligent transportation sy stem (ITS) is in its early stages in the Rogue Valley area, with only a lim ited num ber of devices and program s currently in place. The current ITS sy stem includes: variable messag e signs, traffic m onitoring cam eras, call boxes for motorist assistance, photo violation detection, and incident m anagem ent. The Rogue Valley MPO has created a sub-com mittee of its Technical Advisory Com mittee to initiate developm ent of architecture for an area wide ITS system. Expected to be com pleted by the spring of 2005, this sy stem will ultim ately consist of a wide va riety of strategies, actions and program s to help better m anage the transportation sy stem through the application of technology . ITS Strategies The City of Medford is advancing its use of technology to m anage the city street sy stem through a variety of strategies. The city will continue with its efforts to use ITS m easures such as real-tim e traffic monitoring cameras and managem ent projects that provide m otorist inform ation and incident response/clearance program s, to alleviate tra ffic congestion. These m easures should include: • Installation of a fiber-optic ring within the city to provide enhanced com munications for operations of the traffic signal sy stem ; • Installation of perm anent electronic traffic count ers at key intersections to provide current inform ation about rapidly growing segm ents of the existing collector and arterial street sy stem to Medford Transportatio n System Pl an 8-4 Public Transportation Plan
