It has been well planned, its grades and curves are excellent and the construction was a good job. It has stood the winter well, with but few slides and settlements. Monday the state will begin work upon it to place it in condition for summer travel," announced State Engineer E.I. Cantine after completing a trip with the members of the county court over the highway. Arrangements are being completed today for co-operative work between state and county on the Pacific highway. SPITE FENCE CASE IN CIRCUIT COURT The suit of C.C. Nelson against E.N. Campbell, both living near Talent, to compel the last named to remove two fences, alleged to be obstructing a road, is being heard before Judge F.M. Calkins in the circuit court at Jacksonville today. Fourteen neighbors of the two parties in the suit are called as witnesses. Attorney Porter J. Neff represents Campbell and Attorney Gus Newbury, Nelson. It is alleged in the complaint that Campbell built the "spite" fences across the road, after purchasing the land adjoining, without legal action and the plaintiff asks that the obstructions be ordered removed. Most of the witnesses are interested in opening the road, which has been used for years by residents of Wagner creek. It is expected the case will be concluded today. POSTMASTER'S HAT GOES UP IN SMOKE ASHLAND, April 30 — Ashland's new postmaster does not smoke, but his hat does — or did. Yesterday he wore a brand new Panama hat, but now where is it? While engaged with the young lady attendant at the Plaza confectionery in discussing the merits of shipping sweets by parcel post, his new hat came in contact with the cigar lighter. Result — a conflagration which before it was gotten under control ruined the band, wrecked the crown and smoked the whole framework until the salvage won't amount to the value of a last season's Easter bonnet. No insurance, the policy having expired a day previous. Fortunately he has an old crusher to fall back on. The size of the Panama being 16-7/8, a special order has been rushed in to an eastern factory.
