Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 21, 2005 Driver injured in fiery accident Police have released the names of the people involved in a fiery two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on Highway 62 near Trail. John Lee Knapp, 54, of Eagle Point, remains hospitalized in serious conditionafter his 1977 Ford pickup collided with another truck and caught fire, officials said in a news release. Knapp was driving eastbound at about 1 p.m. when his pickup crossed the center line and hit a westbound Chevrolet pickup driven by Gregory Stevenson, 38, of Medford. Both vehicles caught fire and Knapp was helped out of his pickup by a motorist who stopped to assist, officials said. Knapp was taken by a Mercy Flights helicopter to Providence Medical Center in Medford. Stevenson was not injured in the crash. Stevenson’s passenger, Kathy Lee Hall, 32, of Medford, was taken by ambulance to Providence, where she was treated for minor injuries and released. The other passenger in Stevenson’s pickup was not injured, officials said. Advertisement An investigation to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash is continuing. All occupants of Stevenson’s pickup were wearing seatbelts. It is unknown whether Knapp was wearing a safety belt, officials said. The Oregon Department of Transportation closed the road for approximately 90 minutes while crews cleared wreckage. Jackson County Fire District 4 crews extinguished a small grass fire the crash sparked by the roadside, officials said. Oregon State Police are continuing an investigation into the crash.
