Several mentioned the convenience of available parking Thursday. “It was a pretty busy place, but those big corporate chains make their decisions on their terms,” said Howard Holt of Ashland. “It’s nice. There’s plenty of parking. The other (Starbucks) place downtown has parking issues.” Starbucks representatives would not go into detail on the decision to close its south Ashland decision. “A this point we are closing this location. We are looking for a new location,” said Manager Jessica Bloom, who referred other questions to corporate media relations. An email response to queries from a Starbucks spokesperson said, "We have determined that it is best to close the Ashland Starbucks store. ... We must make the right business decisions for the sake of Starbucks' long-term growth.” All store employees were relocated to surrounding outlets, the spokesperson wrote. Heating and air conditioning company owner Doug Fregus estimated he had secured at least $250,000 in contracts while conducting business at the location over 10 years. “I’ve been here since it opened. I come here as part of my work,” said Fregus. “It's a comfortable, cozy place. It doesn’t feel impersonal.” Southern Oregon University freshman Anna Lewellyn of Medford said she is usually at the shop two times per week. “I’m sad. This is definitely convenient,” said Lewellyn, who drove to the store. Among nearby options are Case Coffee at 1255 Siskiyou Blvd., The Beanery at 1602 Ashland St., a Dutch Bros. drive-through with walkup window in the Ashland Shopping Center and the coffee shop in the Hannon Library on the SOU campus. Starbucks has a kiosk inside Albertsons at 2301 Ashland St. Prior to becoming a Starbucks, the location was Leo's Campus Drive-In. Reach freelance writer Tony Boom at [email protected] .
