CRIME Poodle killed with pellet gun in west Medford Neighbors reported seeing dog running loose Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 27, 2015 at 9:52 AM Updated Mar 27, 2015 at 3:38 PM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Mar. 27, 2015 at 9:52 AM Updated Mar 27, 2015 at 3:38 PM » Social News Police are searching for the person who killed a Medford resident's poodle with a pellet gun Wednesday. Investigators learned of the dog's death at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The animal's owner, of 792 Agate St. in west Medford, returned home after work and found the poodle dead on the back porch, said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. Police have interviewed several neighbors, many of whom reported seeing the dog running around the neighborhood earlier that morning, but no suspects have been identified. The dog had escaped from the home several times before, despite attempts to keep it confined, police said. The pet was taken to Siskiyou Veterinary Clinic, where a metal pellet was removed from its chest. The pellet had struck an artery and a lung, Budreau said, showing that pellet and BB guns can be lethal. "There are some guns you can manually pump, and the more you pump them, the more powerful they are," Budreau said. "That could have been the case here." It's not known whether the dog was shot on the porch or while it was running through the neighborhood and it made it back home before dying on the porch, police said. Both scenarios are still being considered. Surveillance footage from a neighbor's home security camera shows someone hopping the property's fence well before the dog escaped, though the image is poor quality and doesn't offer much detail. "If we didn't have that video ... I would think someone shot it as it was roaming the neighborhood," Budreau said. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Medford police at 541-770-4784. The perpetrator could be charged with first-degree animal abuse, a misdemeanor that can be upgraded to a felony if committed in front of a child, or if the suspect already had been convicted of a similar crime.
