Now NBC (KOBI) runs it from 8 to 11:30 p.m. or later, which is getting past the bedtimes of most of us who have to get up and go to work the next day. Why not run it from 7 to 10:30 p.m. instead? — Katherine L., Medford The answer is simply because of network ratings, Katherine. NBC and its local affiliates want to broadcast the premier highlights of the Olympic games during prime time hours, and those hours are from 8 to 11 p.m. on the East and West coasts. If you live in one of the time zones between coasts, then the prime time hours are 7 to 10 p.m. By airing the best of the games, such as swimming and gymnastics, during these hours, NBC hopes to garner the highest ratings from Neilsen Media Research, a television rating service that analyzes broadcast popularity and viewing demographics in the United States. Some NBC affiliates, such as Bravo, MSNBC, CNBC and USA, will be airing coverage of the Olympics outside of prime-time hours, and there is up-to-the-minute information about the games available at nbcolympics.com.
