Groundbreaking is scheduled April 27 for a 46,500-square-foot police headquarters facing Ivy Street near the corner of 10th Street that will replace the cramped 14,000-square-foot offices on the first floor of City Hall. “We’ve been struggling in a facility that was never designed to be a police facility,” said police Chief Tim George. The police headquarters and a secure parking garage have a budget of $18.8 million, funded through a 30-year bond that will be paid off with a hike in utility fees. The garage will be built behind the headquarters. “This building should last for the next 100 years,” George said. The building, with lots of glass, vertical lines, tan masonry and aluminum panels, is similar in style to the Lithia headquarters. ORW Architecture of Medford is engineering the building to be earthquake resistant.  The first floor of the station will feature a lobby, community room, records area, interview room and locker rooms for female and male officers. The second floor will have processing and interview rooms, as well as offices for investigators and patrol officers. An entrance known as a sally port will be located on the second floor of the parking garage to admit suspects and keep them away from the public on the first floor. The third floor will feature training and briefing rooms and administrative offices. All these features will help create a better police department, George said. “We’re going to solve more cases,” he said. “We’ll get things done quicker, better and faster.” One big improvement is that all training of officers will take place in the police station, freeing police personnel from having to find rooms in various parts of Medford. “We will have our regional training right here,” George said. When George was first hired in 1977, his boss told him not to get too used to being in City Hall. “It’s still temporary more than 30 years later,” George said. David Wilkerson of ORW Architecture said he expects a few tweaks in the design but the project remains within budget.
