So one-sided, in fact, that only the Black Tornado had won. But Saturday afternoon at Fagone Field, the Grizzlies finally got one against North, taking the second game of a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader, 5-0. The Tornado (6-2 overall, 3-1 SOC) rode pitcher Keri Sevano (4-0) to a 4-0 victory in Game 1. Sevano fired a three-hitter, striking out three and walking none, while Beth Morrill scored twice and stole three bases. In Game 2, Aimee Jeska (4-1) and Megan Beugli combined to shut out North on three hits. "Their pitchers did a great job," said Tornado coach Larry Binney, whose team was limited to four hits by Beugli in the first game but took advantage of three Ashland errors to score four unearned runs. "We just beat the ball into the ground, and they didn't make any errors in the second game." Beugli relieved Jeska in the fourth inning and struck out two on one hit over the last four innings to earn the save. The Grizzlies (8-7, 1-3 SOC) did the bulk of their offensive damage in the top of the sixth, when Catherine Clason and Stephanie Talbott drilled doubles to power a four-run outburst. Clason finished Game 2 3-for-4, and Beugli went 2-for-4 for a 4-for-7 day at the plate. "The people that were most excited were the coaches that have been around Ashland softball for many years," said Grizzlies coach Rich Beugli, singling out longtime assistant coaches Terry Adams and Larry Caughran. "We feel great coming out with a win." CRATER 13-17, KLAMATH UNION 2-0- At Klamath Falls, Crater freshman Janelle Cristofaro completed a dominant doubleheader for Crater with a five-inning no-hitter. Cristofaro (5-0) registered her second no-hitter this season and has not allowed an earned run in five appearances. In addition, Cristofaro helped her cause with four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Crater's (11-0, 4-0 SOC) 15-hit attack also featured two-hit efforts by Angie Wright, Tyler Sutherland, Kelle Thomas and Kelsey Anhorn. Sophomore pitcher Jenni Bittle handcuffed the Pelicans on three hits and struck out five in the six-inning opener. Klamath Union scored two unearned runs off Bittle in the fourth inning. Those were the first runs scored in the last 66 innings against Crater. The Comets (11-0, 4-0 SOC) erased a 2-0 deficit by sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs in the fifth. Justine Bettencourt sparked the Comets with three hits, two RBIs and two runs. Thomas, Brandy Wolter and Crystal Huntley added two hits apiece. GRANTS PASS 1-5, SOUTH MEDFORD 0-1- At Grants Pass, South Medford's Darci Byrne pitched a no-hitter in the first game but Grants Pass took two Southern Oregon Conference games. The Cavers (9-4, 2-2 SOC) scored the only run in the fifth inning of the opener when Kathy Richard walked, then stole second and continued home when catcher Mickie Conley's throw sailed over second base and to the fence. South's infield was playing in to guard against a slap hit, and its outfield was manning the bases. Byrne struck out three and walked one. Conley was 3-for-3 and Jennifer Mendenhall 2-for-3 for South (8-6, 2-2 SOC), which had runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings. Jessica Morton went the distance for Grants Pass, allowing seven hits and striking out 10 with no walks. In Game 2, Amber Gallego limited South to two hits, fanning two and walking one. Justine Cerda and Brin Tamblin each had two hits for the Cavers. ROSEBURG 4-6, EAGLE POINT 2-0 - At Roseburg, Brooke Charles' one-hitter in the nightcap completed the sweep for Roseburg (11-0, 4-0 SOC). Charles struck out six, walked four and hit one batter. Jamie Williams got Eagle Point's only hit, a one-out, bloop single in the third inning. Roseburg's Shannon Burmeister went 5-for-6, with three RBIs and four runs in the twin bill. In Game 1, the Eagles (7-5, 0-4 SOC) scored unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead in the second. The Indians tied the game in the third, then scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth when Burmeister scored on a squeeze bunt by Ashley Mendenhall. For Eagle Point (7-5, 0-4 SOC), Christina Bateman had two hits, two stolen bases and one RBI.
