PREP ROUNDUP Henley boys top Glide, 5-1 KLAMATH FALLS -- Playing in conditions more suited for football, the Henley boys soccer team crushed Glide 5-1 Monday for a first-round victory in the Class 3A/2A state playoffs. Originally scheduled to be played Saturday, snowy conditions forced the two teams to hold off their matchup until Monday. After shoveling off the snow-covered soccer field, the Hornets (11-3-1) swept away Glide's hopes of victory as senior Craig Robin scored twice and senior Luke Stevens dominated in goals despite the challenging conditions. "We played well for the conditions we were playing in," Henley coach Rod Husain said. "There was some slipping going on today but it was okay. The field held up to the punishment." Glide, however, was unable to handle the punishing Henley attack, with Robin opening the scoring at the seventh minute from 20 yards out off an assist from senior Peter Boyle. Robin added another goal eight minutes later when he gathered a throw-in by sophomore Peter Isaacson and laced a shot into the net from the same spot as his first goal. Glide cut its deficit to 2-1 with a goal at the 18th minute, only to have Henley answer with a goal at the 32nd minute by junior Josh Ketchum off an assist from Boyle. Henley added to its 3-1 halftime advantage at the 56th minute as senior Sean Carlson took a pass from Ketchum and found the net from 6 yards out. The Hornets closed out the scoring in style a few minutes later as Boyle scored on a diving header, with freshman Joe Salvati earning the assist. The Hornets next turn their attention to a powerful La Salle program that had been ranked No. 1 this season until recently dropping to No. 2. Henley travels to Portland Wednesday for a second round state playoff match at 2 p.m. "We have our work cut out for us on Wednesday," Husain said. "But I'm confident that if we play as well as we have all year, we'll have a good showing." Girls soccer SUTHERLIN -- The Henley girls scored early and often and went on to rout Sutherlin 10-0 in a Class 3A state soccer playoff match. The Hornets now travel to Pleasant Hill for a second-round match Wednesday. Volleyball Henley looked to be on the verge of victory but saw it slip away in a Class 3A sub-state volleyball playoff match on Monday. Visiting Siuslaw lost the first game and trailed 10-3 in the second before charging back for a 5-15, 15-13, 15-10 victory. With the win, Siuslaw advances to the Class 3A state tournament at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. The Florence-based school will meet Clatskanie in a first-round match on Friday. April Latham and Lynsey Mead each had nine kills to lead the Vikings. Jessica Horsley had 10 kills to pace Henley. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1998, Medford,
