LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Jan. 28 MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 28, 2016 @ 12:01 am Posted Jan. 28, 2016 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Abortion is still legal The letter writer whose letter appeared in the Jan. 20 issue of the Tribune complained that, during a recent press conference, President Obama showed an emotional reaction to children who were killed in recent shooting incidents, but did not shed tears over the 1 million "children" who are “murdered” during abortion procedures each year, imbuing unborn fetuses with the same attributes as elementary children who are murdered by people wielding lethal firearms against them. The letter writer then wrapped up his whole argument by saying that, oh, the president is simply upholding a “liberal” ideology by failing to condemn abortion during a news conference that addressed victims of gun violence — despite the fact that, the last time I looked, abortion procedures were still legal in the U.S. The letter writer further states that the president's “double standard” on this occasion was what was causing current divisions in the U.S. I would counter that it is people such as the letter writer, and the conservative movement in the U.S., who are causing the divisions under which we have been experiencing increasing amounts of hate and discontent in the U.S. since the late 1990s. Gregory Avery Medford Beyond reason The latest cry and hue from left laments that 2015 was the warmest year since they started keeping records, 1880. In total 135 years. Do you realize how infinitesimal a period of 135 years is in the overall picture of the time the earth has been around — millions of years —it’s less than infinitesimal. How many warm/hot, ice, dry and wet ages have there been? Why are there no dinosaurs or other "pre-historic" animals? There were no humans around to "cause" these changes, but they happened. They will continue to occur far into the future of the Earth without the help of humans. It’s beyond reason to think the temperature ages will change because of human intervention. Ironic that a few weeks ago the East Coast was lamenting the fact that they had 80-degree temperatures and were wearing shorts and now they need to declare disasters because of the annual snowstorms. This is how earth temperatures work. Hot some days and cold the next. P. Moran Medford Hubris and greed The huge methane leak in Porter Ranch, Calif., and toxic water in Flint, Mich., are two faces of one problem. Thoughtless actions of malfeasance by both industry and government, fueled by profit motive with little sense of consequence have led us to an untenable future. The naysayers have finally lost ground publicly as more and more proof of climate change comes to the forefront. Even today the oil and gas industry and political cronies alike misinform the public, attack climate activists and control large swaths of government. Corporate and government negligence with aging infrastructure put us all at risk. There are many thousand active and "sealed" oil and natural gas wells destined to fail in the U.S. alone! Global water reserves will be affected without drastic action. This is not an exaggeration. All wells are destined to fail eventually according to oil industry scientists. If we do not greatly reduce greenhouse gases soon, and act to protect the environment, mankind itself may well perish. Let us not have man’s epitaph be that "Hubris and Greed Sealed their Fate."
