He reached the age of 85. "Rollie" was born in Sunol, Neb., during the Great Depression, to Leo Burton Washburn and Opal Mae (Underhill) Washburn. In 1942 the family moved to Oregon and bought a home in Gold Hill. Soon after, they moved to California to be with family. This only lasted a short time, until the war brought them back to Camp White, where his father Leo helped build the camp. Roland attended Gold Hill High School and graduated in the class of '46. He met his sweetheart, Beverly Christensen, and they married in 1948. They lived in Gold Hill in several different homes but always returned to their "rock house." They were married almost 60 years, missing this landmark anniversary by only two months. The couple had three children: Carol, Patti, and Larry. The children and their families were very important in their lives. As a young man Roland worked in the mills doing many jobs. His main career was selling real estate in Central Point and Gold Hill. Later he became a real estate broker. Roland and Beverly both retired from their jobs in 1987. Together they spent many hours camping, fishing, and bird watching. He also enjoyed woodworking. He built 22 bird houses and installed them along the Gold Hill hiking trail that runs along the river. In addition, he helped the Gold Hill food bank by loading and unloading food items. He noticed they needed a place to store food and built additional storage shelves. He also helped at the Gold Hill Historical Society where he was a member. He was a very giving, caring man and will be missed by friends and family alike. Roland was preceded in death by his parents Leo (1947) and Opal (1999) as well as his beloved Beverly in 2008. He is survived by his children, Carol and Wayne Blagden, Patti and Joe Frazier, and Larry and Candy Washburn; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. A service will be held at the Central Point Conger-Morris Chapel, 800 S. Front St., April 11, 2015 at 11 am. A private family burial will follow. A "celebration of life" for Roland and Beverly Washburn will be held in Gold Hill at the home of his daughter, Patti, following the services at about 2:00 pm.
