I remember that economic development and education were supposed to get funding, but are there others? (I know it's not funding.) — Jeff, Medford Jeff, we hope you have a back-up plan because we haven't heard of a lot of wildly successful financial strategies based on playing the lottery. But at least you can feel good that your money is going to worthwhile causes. You are right that economic development and education get Oregon Lottery proceeds. In fact, they get the lion's share: 27 percent to economic development and 57 percent to education. When the Lottery was established by voters in 1984, the proceeds were all earmarked for economic development, but they have since been split into five areas. In addition to the two big winners, the other recipients of Lottery dollars are: State parks and natural resources, 7.5 percent Watershed enhancement and salmon restoration, 7.5 percent. Problem gambling treatment, 1 percent. Those funds don't all disappear into bureaucrats' pockets, either. According to the Lottery's website, www.oregonlottery.org , projects in Jackson County alone received nearly $25 million in lottery disbursements in the 2013-15 biennium.
