Their final 22 batters went hitless, demoted closer Steve Cishek had another rocky outing and Miami lost to Arizona 3-2 in 13 innings Monday night, spoiling Dan Jennings' debut as manager. Jennings gave up his job as general manager to move into the dugout and replace Redmond, who was fired Sunday. The Marlins lost their fourth game in a row, and seventh in eight games, but Jennings tried to put a positive spin on the latest defeat. "There's a lot of good to take away," he said. "There's a great energy in the clubhouse and dugout. We just came up a little short." The Marlins totaled six hits, the last of which was rookie J.T. Realmuto's first career homer, a two-run shot with none out in the seventh. The lack of offense had Jennings working overtime on his first day as a manager. "It was surreal to be there in the moment," he said. "It definitely moves quicker in the dugout than it does in the suite upstairs." Like Miami, Arizona had been scuffling until David Peralta hit a two-out RBI double in the 13th inning off Cishek (1-4). The Diamondbacks broke a four-game losing streak. "I needed that," manager Chip Hale said. "We all needed that." Rubby De La Rosa pitched a career-high nine innings for the Diamondbacks and allowed two runs. In 35 previous career starts, the right-hander had never gone more than seven innings. "A great start from Rubby," Hale said. "What great stuff." Chris Owings singled to start the 13th, stole second and went to third on a groundout. Peralta then pulled a double against Cishek. "I faced him last year and know what kind of pitches he's got," Peralta said. "He just hung a slider, and I was able to swing the bat and get it to the line." Cishek, who has an ERA of 8.22, gave up three hits in two innings. "It's just really unexplainable," he said. "I felt like I was throwing the best I've thrown all year." Yasmany Tomas had a two-run double in the fourth for Arizona's other runs. Addison Reed (1-2) pitched around two walks in the 12th inning. Diamondbacks rookie Enrique Burgos issued a walk in the 13th, and Ichiro Suzuki stole second, but the call was reversed by a replay review, erasing the runner. Burgos then struck out Jeff Baker for his first career save. Miami's Dan Haren allowed two runs in eight innings, his longest outing this season. For the fourth start in a row, Haren didn't issue a walk. Moments before the game, Suzuki put a Marlins dress tie around Jennings' neck, and everyone in the dugout shared a good laugh. "It was almost a feeling of acceptance," Jennings said. "That was a special moment coming from a Hall of Famer. It made me feel like part of the group." WHITE SOX 2, INDIANS 1, 10 INNINGS CHICAGO (AP) — Carlos Sanchez singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning to give streaking Chicago a victory over Cleveland after a sparkling pitchers' duel between aces Chris Sale and Corey Kluber. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, Kluber struck out 12 and allowed five hits and one run for the Indians. Kluber was making his first appearance since his outing Wednesday against St. Louis when he struck out 18 and allowed one hit in eight scoreless innings for his first victory of the season. In that game, Kluber matched Bob Feller's team record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, and became one of five pitchers in baseball history to strike out 18 or more without walking a batter. Sale tossed eight innings and gave up one run on four hits while striking out seven. Avisail Garcia drew a leadoff walk in the 10th on four pitches from Zach McAllister (0-2). Zach Duke (2-2) worked a hitless inning for the win. BLUE JAYS 10, ANGELS 6 TORONTO (AP) — Jose Bautista homered and drove in three runs as Toronto ended a season-worst, five-game losing streak by beating Los Angeles. Bautista and Russell Martin, who had a go-ahead single in the sixth inning, each finished with three hits. Albert Pujols, David Freese and Chris Iannetta hit solo homers for the Angels, who lost their second straight after winning the previous five. A crowd of 29,306 watched at the Rogers Centre on Victoria Day, a Canadian holiday since the mid-1800s that celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday. Roberto Osuna (1-0) worked 1 2-3 innings for his first major league win. Mike Morin (1-1) was the loser. BREWERS 3, TIGERS 2 DETROIT (AP) — Back in the lineup a day after being beaned, Carlos Gomez led off the game with a home run and added a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning to lift Milwaukee over Detroit. Gomez was hit in the left earflap by a 96 mph fastball from New York Mets rookie Noah Syndergaard on Sunday, but played in the series opener at Detroit and began the game with a drive to left off Kyle Lobstein (3-4). With the score tied at 2 and two outs in the seventh, Gomez singled up the middle to score Luis Sardinas from second. Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) earned the win. Brewers reliever Jonathan Broxton worked through a jam in the eighth, and Francisco Rodriguez finished for his eighth save in as many chances. Aramis Ramirez homered for the Brewers. ATHLETICS 2, ASTROS 1 HOUSTON (AP) — Brett Lawrie hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth, and the Oakland bullpen combined for 4 2-3 scoreless innings as the Athletics snapped a four-game losing streak with a victory over Houston. The loss snapped the Astros' five-game winning streak. Lawrie's hit came off Will Harris. Joe Thatcher (0-1) gave up an infield single and two walks to load the bases with no outs. Edward Mujica (2-1) went 1 2-3 innings for the win. Evan Scribner threw two innings and Tyler Clippard pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Oakland starter Drew Pomeranz left in the fifth with left shoulder tightness. Lance McCullers of the Astros allowed one run over 4 2-3 innings in his first career start. METS 2, CARDINALS 1, 14 INNINGS NEW YORK (AP) — Pinch-hitter John Mayberry Jr. drove home the winning run with an infield single in the 14th inning, lifting New York over St. Louis after the Mets blew another slim lead for Matt Harvey. Lucas Duda beat a shifted, drawn-in infield with an RBI single off John Lackey in the fourth, but Jason Heyward had a sacrifice fly in the ninth against closer Jeurys Familia as the Mets' bullpen squandered a 1-0 lead for Harvey in his second straight start. It was Familia's first blown save in 14 chances — and the third consecutive time New York gave Harvey only one run of support. Sam Tuivailala (0-1) walked Eric Campbell and Duda to open the 14th. Mayberry came through with the bases loaded and one out against closer Trevor Rosenthal. Carlos Torres (2-2) pitched two innings to help the NL East leaders win their third in a row after a five-game skid. The Mets were the last major league team to play extra innings this season. The Cardinals went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position. Harvey matched a season high with nine strikeouts in running his scoreless innings streak to 16 and lowering his ERA to 1.98. PHILLIES 4, ROCKIES 3 DENVER (AP) — Cole Hamels pitched efficiently into the eighth inning and Odubel Herrera broke a tie in the sixth with a two-run double as Philadelphia beat Colorado for its sixth straight victory. Hamels (4-3) allowed one run and struck out seven in 7 1-3 sharp innings. Philadelphia is on its longest winning streak since a seven-game run in September 2012. Herrera had the decisive hit when he sent a two-out fastball from Jordan Lyles (2-4) into right field to make it 3-1. Carlos Ruiz added an RBI single. Colorado struck out 11 times, extending the club's dubious streak to six straight games with 10 or more Ks. That's a new team record. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a rocky ninth to earn his 10th save in as many chances.
