Mail Tribune 100: Oct. 19, 1915 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago. Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 19, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 19, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Oct. 19, 1915 FOUR INDICTMENTS BY GRAND JURY The grand jury for the October term of the circuit court closed Monday afternoon, after but one day's session — the shortest in years in Jackson County. Four true bills were returned. The grand jury report was brief. Aside from the observations on the criminal matters, it was found that "the county offices were conducted in an orderly manner and that the building was sanitary." Orris Crawford of this city was foreman. The true bills returned were: Fred Chipp, charged with burglary of the Cranfill-Robbinett store at Central Point, Charles Austin, indicted for pointing a gun at another; Harry Young, indicted for larceny, the prisoner refusing to reveal his true name, to protect the good name of his family; and a "John Doe" indictment for robbery. The petit jury will open its sessions next Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Hearing upon applications for citizenship papers will also be heard this week. PLAN CAMPAIGN TO SECURE ACREAGE FOR SUGAR BEETS Formation of a campaign to enlist acreage in a million dollar beet sugar project of the Oregon-Utah company is under way, and the committees are expected to be at work before the end of the week. The committees that conducted the campaign last spring are still intact, with W.H. Gore as chairman. Messrs. Bramwell and Nibley will have a talk with Mr. Gore and other members of the committee this afternoon. 36TH ANNIVERSARY OF ELECTRIC LIGHT INVENTION Thirty-six years ago on Oct. 21, Thomas A. Edison gave to the world the first successful incandescent electric lamp. Last year a movement was started to celebrate Oct. 21 as Edison Day throughout the country. Since then this date will be stamped indelibly on the minds of everyone as the greatest single achievement of the world genius. Up to the very day 36 years ago when Edison announced the discovery of the new lamp, the greatest scientists and inventors in the world said repeatedly that the incandescent lamp was an impossibility. But Edison proved that it could be done, as he has proved a hundred other things and gave to the world its first commercial electric lamp bulb. On Oct. 21 a nation will honor the genius who has done so much to enlarge our working day, to banish night and thus increase the scope of industry and art.
