RiverDogs fall to Portland squad PORTLAND - The Southern Oregon RiverDogs outhit the Portland Wildcats 11-8 but defensive lapses contributed to a 6-4 amateur baseball loss Friday. "We seem to be making the mistakes of a young team," said RiverDogs' manager John White, whose team fell to 7-8 on the season. "We have a lot of guys who are redshirt status in college or haven't played a lot. Today we hit the ball real well but our defense was suspect at times." Southern Oregon starting pitcher Nate Mayben (0-2) did a credible job, allowing five hits and one earned run through six innings. The RiverDogs grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Don Jenkins' two-out, two-run single. But Portland came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Southern Oregon regained the lead in the fifth on Andy Bartels sacrifice fly, which scored Ryan Wilson, who doubled and went to third on Steve DeClerck's single. The Wildcats again answered in the bottom of the frame. Cliff Johnson's RBI double sparked a three run rally for Portland. In the sixth, Southern Oregon scored its final run on a Mike Newmann single, a sacrifice bunt and Caleb Robbins' RBI single. Robbins went 3-for-4 to lead the RiverDogs' attack, while Newmann and Andy Bartels each contributed two hits. "There's little portions here and there that we need to become more solid," said White. "Once we put all the pieces together, we'll be very strong." The RiverDogs face the Wildcats in a 5 p.m. doubleheader in Portland today and the two teams complete the five-game series with a twinbill at noon Sunday. S.O. ROSEBURG PEPSI TOURNAMENT - At Roseburg, the North Medford Mavericks American Legion A team forged a 9-9 tie to Roseburg Horizon and dropped an 8-1 decision in five innings to Sutherlin in the opening day of the Roseburg Pepsi Tournament at Legion Field. Each team plays four games through the first two days of the six-team tournament. The teams are seeded and play a single game with the top two seeds playing for the tournament title. There is a time limit on games. Against Roseburg, North led 7-1 through four innings in its opener, then Horizon exploded with six runs in the fifth, highlighted by Sky Manon's bases-loaded triple. The Mavericks scored two runs in the sixth to grab a 9-7 lead, but Roseburg answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Russ Vandell went 4-for-4 to lead the Mavericks 10-hit attack. Jimmy Ulrey added two hits for North. In the second game, Chris Brewington and Beau Hovland each collected two hits for the Mavericks.
