Rogue River picks up first conference victory ROGUE RIVER � The Rogue River Chieftains dusted themselves off and got back in the Skyline Conference softball race Tuesday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Lakeview. The Chieftains � considered a top contender for the Skyline crown � fell flat on their faces in Saturday�s conference-opening doubleheader against Illinois Valley. But things got better Tuesday. "That was a big surprise for us, too, but Illinois Valley has a good ballclub," Rogue River coach Dennis Artoff said. "It was a little bit of a wake-up call." Artoff is mindful of Phoenix�s slow start a year ago when the Pirates had high expectations and needed nine straight wins to make the playoffs. "Hopefully, we don�t take that long to recover," Artoff said. "Our bats were sleeping the other day. We hit the ball right at people tonight." Katie Glasscock blanked the Honkers on two hits, striking out four and walking none. Rogue River (5-2, 1-2 Skyline) scored the game�s only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kristi Frederick drew a one-out walk, stole second base, took third on Kelly Simmons� ground out then rode home on Lacey Mack�s two-out base hit to left field. Lakeview threatened in the top of the sixth when Krissy Newton singled, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third base on a passed ball. But third baseman K.K. Smith surprised Newton when she grabbed a ground ball and threw behind her to shortstop Frederick, who tagged Newton. W� Glasscock (5-2). L � Johnson. ILLINOIS VALLEY 8, MAZAMA 7 � At Cave Junction, Illinois Valley overcame eight errors and a five-run first inning by Mazama to earn a Skyline Conference victory. Buoyed by two errors by Illinois Valley and a two-run homer by Krystal Lawrence, the Vikings jumped out early but couldn�t hold on as Tiphanie Pope slapped two doubles and had three RBIs for the Cougars (5-2, 3-0 Skyline). Kim Hamilton came on in relief to help slow Mazama�s attack after the first-inning outburst, while Rachel Pierce and Vanessa Box each had two hits and Cathy Nadow had two RBIs. Mazama dropped to 0-3 in Skyline play. North Valley (2-6, 1-2 Skyline) got an unearned run in the third when sophomore outfielder Augusta Richards walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error. Kandice McClung had two hits for Henley (5-0, 3-0 Sky). Megan Capp was 3-for-3, scored twice and stole a base for Phoenix (6-1, 3-0 Skyline). Sutton Jackson added a double and triple in three at-bats, had two RBIs and scored a run. Jennifer Dunlap was 2-for-3, scored twice and had an RBI. Winning pitcher Tiffany Ross struck out nine, walked none and allowed two hits.
