Lorraine Antcha Dimoff Mattos MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 31, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Aug. 31, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Our sweet Lorraine was born in Portland, Ore. to Jordan Dimoff and Lois Sweeney Dimoff, December 16, 1933. She attended Kennedy Grade School and Jefferson High School. Known for playing tennis in the Northwest, Lorraine, while attending Lewis and Clark College, played #1 in doubles and #2 in singles on the men's tennis team, eventually becoming the first woman invited to become a member of the Lewis and Clark Athletic Hall of Fame. She graduated with a BA in Physical Education and Health. Upon graduation she attended Portland State University, receiving an elementary education credential, and completed graduate work at several universities. After obtaining her degree, Lorraine taught P.E. and health at Highland Grade School, Milwaukie High School, Roosevelt High School, and one month at Cleveland High School. It was there she became ill with kidney failure, losing 70% of both kidneys. For ten years she functioned with the remaining 30%, and then went on dialysis for fifteen months. On December 12, 1969, she received a cadaver kidney transplant, living with her new kidney for 45 years until her death Wednesday, August 20, 2014. Defying the odds with a smile and quiet determination, Lorraine continued to teach in Siskiyou County, at Big Springs Elementary and the majority of her career at Weed Elementary School. She also continued to play tennis, hike, walk regularly, and travel the world. Her quieter joys included knitting, sewing, watching tennis matches on T.V., and avidly reading! Lorraine, always grateful for her new found life, was very thankful for Dr. Samuel Kountz, her transplant physician, and Dr.s Roger Hutchings, Bruce VanZee, and Douglas Hecox who helped keep her healthy the remainder of her life. She was a member of the Dixie Fat Cats; Superior Athletic Club, Southern Oregon Tennis Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Southern Oregon Historical Society, the High Desert Museum, and the Sunriver Nature Center. Lorraine was preceded in death by her loving husband, George; mother; father; younger sister, Sharon; and younger brother, Larry. She is survived by her brother, Clifford; five step-children, and many nieces and nephews. Lorraine was an inspiration to all who knew her: always positive, always smiling, always hugging. The void left by her death will be filled by her enduring warmth and the many memories that remain. Donations in memory of Lorraine can be sent to the Kidney Foundation (kidney.org/support) or Oregon Donor (www.oregondonor.gov). A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m.-4 p.m. October 11, 2014, at the Bella Union Restaurant in Jacksonville, Ore.
