Bonanza throttles St. Mary's Bonanza got off to a good start in quest of its first Southern Cascade League football title since 1993 when the Antlers overpowered St. Mary's 50-0 Saturday at Spiegelberg Stadium. Bonanza scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter to take a 20-0 lead and the Crusaders never recovered. The game was called late in the fourth quarter because of the 45-point mercy rule when Brad Hadley scored on a 16-yard run. "Overall, they're a good looking team," St. Mary's coach Dick Maurer. "They're going to vie for the conference championship." Led by quarterback Jeremy Grande, who ran for one touchdown and passed for another, Bonanza totalled 307 yards in offense and recovered four St. Mary's fumbles. "Their quarterback Grande could have thrown on us all day," said Maurer. St. Mary's best scoring opportunity came late in the second quarter when the Crusaders were stopped inside the Bonanza 1 on a fourth-and-goal situation. A long pass play from Crusader quarterback Tracey Terrall to Tyler Stout set up the scoring opportunity. Maurer had praise for Terrall's defensive performance and the efforts of Matt Naumes and Andy Erickson.
