Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 31, 2005 Since You Asked: Interchange traffic is part of progress I’m writing to ask about the traffic flow on Crater Lake Highway now that the new north Medford interchange has opened. Regardless of which direction you’re headed, it’s gridlock, all day long. It reminds me of the Harbor Freeway in downtown Los Angeles at 5 p.m. on Friday — except that moves much quicker than Crater Lake Highway. Will traffic improve? — Bill F., Medford You’re in luck, Bill. It’s temporary. We asked Gary Leaming at the Oregon Department of Transportation, and he said the slowdown is the result of the work being done on the north Medford interchange project, which is still under construction. When the work is gone, so, too, should most of the backups. With the new traffic patterns, orange barrels, and unfinished roadways, motorists like you are no doubt wondering how long this pain will last, said Gary. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of October, and contractor JW Fowler is working to meet that deadline. The idea is that folks driving on Highway 62 and I-5 won’t have to drop off and mingle with local traffic between the highway and interstate: They’ll be able to sail through.
