Brent St. Germain: Riding the weight-loss roller coaster By Brent St. Germain HoumaToday.com MailTribune.com By Brent St. Germain HoumaToday.com Posted Mar. 10, 2015 @ 8:33 am By Brent St. Germain HoumaToday.com Posted Mar. 10, 2015 @ 8:33 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Each year, it was a different trip. Sometimes, we would go camping, while other times, it was a trip to the beach or white-water rafting in Colorado. Regardless, I always looked forward to spending time with my family on vacations. But off all the trips we took, there was always one stop on the top of my list — amusement parks. I always looked forward to those trips because of roller coasters. My love of roller coasters started with a ride on the Zephyr at Pontchartrain Beach in New Orleans. From there, I tried to ride as many roller coasters as I could over the years, such as Space Mountain (Walt Disney World), Texas Cyclone (Six Flags Astroworld), the Beast (Kings Island), Batman: The Ride (Six Flags New Orleans) and Fahrenheit (Hersheypark). To this day, I still enjoy riding roller coasters. Although some of these rides and theme parks are now gone, I have fond memories of countless thrills on these rides. There’s a certain rush you feel when riding a roller coaster. It’s all about the ups and downs, twists and turns and, of course, loops. Trying to lose weight is sort of like riding a roller coaster. No matter what avenue you take (weight-loss surgery or diets), there are sure to be many ups and downs, twists and turns, and, of course, loops along the way. Since I decided to have weight-loss surgery nearly a year ago, it seems like I have taken many trips on the weight-loss roller coaster. In fact, I’ve experienced my fair share of ups and downs, twists and turns, and, of course, loops in that time, especially the past few months. Since the holidays, my weight loss has been at snail’s pace. I put on a few pounds for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I was not discouraged. In fact, I expected it. But I was able to rededicate myself, and the effects are starting to show as I am losing weight but at a much slower pace. Actually, I am currently at a weight where I plateaued at a few years ago on a specific diet, so it is just taking a little time to get over that hump. Once that happens, I am expecting the weight-loss roller coaster to hit the high gear and watch the pounds continue to melt away. Weight-loss surgery is not a quick fix or the easy way out. That is misconception that is shared by many people, including those who have had the surgery. No one ever said losing weight is easy. It takes hard work and dedication to achieve this goal. You have to eat the right foods, limit your portions and exercise. It may take a few rides on the weight-loss roller coaster and enduring the ups and downs, twists and turns and, of course, loops along the way to get it done, but in the end, you can achieve your goal. WEIGHT-LOSS UPDATE Starting weight (April 1): 401.2 pounds. Surgery weight (April 15): 383 pounds. Current weight (as of March 3): 297.4 pounds for a total weight loss of 103.8 pounds. Remaining pounds to lose to reach goal: 97.4 pounds. Brent St. Germain is the sports editor of The Houma (La.) Courier and The Thibodaux (La.) Daily Comet.
