A banner containing the above legend was stretched across the main street of Grants Pass at midnight Christmas eve, following a celebration said to be based upon receipt of a telegram from Messrs. Sanders and Nibley, stating that the sugar factory had been assured Grants Pass. Announcement to a similar effect was made in the Portland papers upon a telegram received from Alex Nibley. All doubt as to the location of the factory was long ago eliminated in Medford by actions of the promoters and there is little enthusiasm over the project among those signing acreage contracts. LOCAL AND PERSONAL When Chief of Police Hittson recently notified property owners of the city that he would be compelled to enforce an ordinance against maintaining filthy dooryards and outhouses, found in unsanitary condition, the response was fairly respectful. A few, however, ignored the request. The Mail Tribune is requested to say, on the authority of Chief Hittson, that no further warning will be given to those who have failed to respect his previous notice. Arrests will follow and fines will follow arrests if those premises are not cleaned up at once. Dirty dooryards, unclean outhouses and filthy conditions generally are found on some of these premises. The health officer will assist in this proposed clean-up. There is no excuse for dirty, unsanitary premises anywhere in this city. The extensive limestone deposit on Coleman creek, near Phoenix, which has been worked for many years in the preparation of lime-sulphur spray, will probably soon be the scene of busy operation of a limestone crusher for the farmers who desire to use limestone carbonate on their soil. A mill can be put in at nominal cost that will grind 20 tons in ten hours. The farmers should insist on the stone being crushed into a fine flour, as the course rock will do practically no good except as it is pulverized by the chemical action of the elements. This is a very slow process. Limestone carbonate flour should be 100-mesh fine. The farmer then gets immediate benefit of the application of carbonate of lime to his soils.
