Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 8, 2005 Grant funds go to shelter Dunn House, Jackson County’s domestic-violence shelter, has received a $20,000 grant from the foundation created by cosmetics icon Mary Kay Ash. The grant, announced this week, is among some $3 million awarded by the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation during October, designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The local funds will pay for client assistance, including goods and services ranging from diapers to gas vouchers, rent assistance and an annual holiday party, said Anna D’Amato, director of Victims Services for Community Works, which runs the shelter. "Those are things that you don’t normally get funded for and we need them," D’Amato said. "It’s significant for us." The funding augments annual budgets of about $400,000 for Dunn House and nearly $885,000 for the overall Victims Services department, D’Amato said. Dunn House provides shelter to about 350 women and children annually. On average, the shelter houses 25 people each night, D’Amato said. Dunn House is among 150 organizations nationwide to receive a shelter grant from the foundation, which raises money in part through donations from individual consultants who sell Mary Kay cosmetics. "Their contributions at Mary Kay’s annual seminars in Dallas this summer set new records for giving at that event," said Michael Lunceford, president of the Mary Kay Ash Foundation.
