That area is already a traffic mess, and with In-N-Out nearby and Costco there, good luck. Eugene Wood Grants Pass Hats off to Hiram Here's to Hiram Towle, General Manager of Mt. Ashland Ski Area and crew. Hiram, in his short time as Mt. A's GM, has sincere concern for the success of Mt. Ashland and its benefits to the community. Congratulations to Hiram's crew leaders Malone, Woody and Emily, to mention a few, and don't forget the Ski Patrol. The groomers, lift operators and food operations were outstanding. Great job by all! The end of season "Big Mountain Bash" Saturday was a tribute to a weak winter turned strong through the visions of the crew at Mt. Ashland. Everyone I spoke to was so happy to see Mt. Ashland back to the friendly area it was in the past. The grooming, considering the minimal snow, was the best in years. Every employee had good things to say about the "boss" and his supervisors. The board made an excellent choice selecting Hiram. He is a smart, innovative and capable leader. He is visible, friendly and just truly a nice person. Thank you, Hiram, for all you have done for Mt. Ashland this past season. Ray Redpath Ashland Costco vs. wetlands I was appalled to see the proposed site for the new Costco store. Aside from the obvious misaligned traffic patterns, there are wetlands on that property. I am sure the plan allows for the City to "mitigate" these wetlands. How can you mitigate a wetland necessary for migration and for that part of the Medford environment? How can you redirect flight paths of birds without changing the ecological viability of those species? Did our planners not learn that "mitigating" is a feel-good word for "get it out of the way for progress?" The public allowed the lumber industry (a renewable resource) to be "mitigated" out of viable existence because it did not feel good to cut trees and disturb owls; but, we can allow a resource to be deleted entirely in the name of progress. Please call the Planning Commission and the Medford City Council and stop this move. Carroll Newcomb Central Point Thanks for kitten stories We want to thank the Mail Tribune staff for the three articles that were published about our sight-impaired foster kittens, Seus and Monique. Thanks also go to Dr. Cassandra Bliss of Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center and Dr. Bradford Frank and Dr. Tami Rogers of Jacksonville Veterinary Hospital for providing the special care the kittens needed. TV channels KOBI, KDRV and KOBI also provided ongoing coverage of how the kittens were recuperating. We also thank Hubbard's Hardware employees, who initially rescued the kittens, and their employee Rene and her mother, who took care of the kittens until Committed Alliance to Strays could help. The kittens have been adopted by Maggie Kilroy, who will give them a loving home. Leo and Marilyn Kimm, Foster Parents for C.A.T.S. Medford Opinion lacked perspective Mr. Phil Guidotti makes some grand statements in his Guest Opinion in the March 29 MT saying he wants to overturn the Citizens United court ruling and end the influence of money in elections. I take issue with him for two main reasons. The first is that neither he nor his proxies have the right to tell individuals or groups of like-minded individuals how they can spend their money. The First Amendment to the Constitution, as confirmed by the Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, makes this point abundantly clear. The second is a lack of perspective on his part. Mr. Guidotti correctly states that fundraising for the 2014 congressional elections amounted to about $3.67 billion. What he doesn't say is that the lion's share of this money paid for marketing. He also doesn't say that in 2013 over $171 billion was spent on advertising in the U.S., some $5.8 billion of that in the restaurant industry alone, and almost $1 billion of that just by McDonalds. Ultimately, limiting fundraising limits advertising, which limits a candidate's ability to get his or her message out. Why would anybody want to do that? John F.
