A lineup of nationally known American roots, folk and bluegrass musicians will perform from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 9, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 10, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 405 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland. Saturday's talent features Rockabilly Hall of Famers Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, roots band Dustbowl Revival and Portland folk band Shook Twins. Sunday showcases Grammy-winner Peter Rowan and progressive bluegrass band Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen. Also look for Beth Wood, Misner & Smith and a cappella group Honey Whiskey Trio on Saturday, and modern folk artist Anthony D'Amato, Liz Longley and Anne & Pete Sibley on Sunday. A schedule of performances and performers' biographies can be seen at www.gaiaconcerts.com . Early-bird tickets cost $35 per day or $63 for a weekend pass and can be purchased online at gaiaconcerts.com , Music Coop in Ashland or Musichead in Medford. For almost 30 years, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have kept a constant cycle of touring back and forth across the U.S., then hopping across the pond to Europe and beyond. The group brings a brand of American music that has earned an induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, several national television appearances and guest spots on Grand Ole Opry. The Fly-Rite Boys were named Best Rockabilly Band two years in a row at the Ameripolitan Music Awards in Austin, Texas. Still touring in support of "What a Dream It's Been," the critically acclaimed acoustic album that reinterprets a dozen of the band's favorite originals from its repertoire. While revisiting gems from the past, the 2013 album released on roots label Cow Island Music establishes itself as more than a greatest-hits package. With strains of blues, hillbilly, country, swing, rock steady, and — of course — rockabilly running through its 12 tracks, "What a Dream" introduces Big Sandy's songs into the Great American Songbook. Rowan started his career as a songwriter, rhythm guitarist and singer from 1964 to 1967 with the "Father of Bluegrass" Bill Monroe. The American mandolinist, singer and songwriter created the style of music known as bluegrass, a genre that takes its name from his band, Blue Grass Boys, named for Monroe's home state of Kentucky. Rowan is regarded by many as the strongest living link to Monroe's original bluegrass as well as a creative innovator in his own right. From his years under the tutelage of Monroe to his time in Old & In the Way and his breakout as a solo musician and bandleader, Rowan has built an international fan base through his recordings, collaborative projects and constant touring. Sunday's performances will kick off with a community gathering featuring many of the festival artists singing songs about motherhood, parenting and parent-child relationships. The songs will vary from serious to humorous, but all will celebrate Mother's Day. Along with local food, beer and wine vendors at the festival, there also will be treats for all of the mothers and wives in the audience. Look for the level of live entertainment at Rootsfest that audiences have come to expect at larger, regional festivals such as Sisters Folk Festival and Strawberry Music Festival.
