The Oregon Department of Transportation reported the exit will remain open, but Luman Road — which drivers can use to access Fern Valley Road, then Highway 99 — will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28. During the closure, crews plan to raise the intersection at Luman Road and Fern Valley Road by two feet to match the new road elevation, ODOT officials said. "This is one of those critical pieces to getting the new interchange open," ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said . "Monday morning when it reopens, then the signals will be back on, and traffic will be driving through the intersection again on brand new asphalt." Anyone wanting to access the Ray's Food Place in Phoenix or other main street businesses and the rest of town west of the interstate will need to access Highway 99 at either exit 21 or exit 27. Flag crews will guide drivers into the Shoppes At Exit 24 and adjacent RV park. "Please get off at the exit before," Leaming said. "We're recommending you go down either to Talent or the south Medford interchange." The closure is part of an ongoing $72 million project that will upgrade exit 24 to a "diverging diamond" pattern, the first of its kind in Oregon. On such an interchange, vehicles approach the overpass in the right lane, which allows a free right turn onto the freeway. The lanes cross, allowing a free left turn onto the freeway headed the opposite direction, then cross back to put vehicles in the usual right-hand lanes as they continue on the road.
