Grants Pass woman struck and killed while sitting in dark roadway Tuesday Dec 19, 2017 at 3:36 PM Dec 19, 2017 at 3:36 PM A Grants Pass woman died early today when a pickup truck struck her while she was sitting in the middle of Hamilton Lane in the dark. The accident occurred just before 6:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Hamilton Lane, an unlit county road about one mile south of Grants Pass, according to an Oregon State Police release. Barbara J. Kriewitz, 55, of Grants Pass, who was wearing dark clothing, died at the scene, the release said. It is unknown why she was sitting in the middle of the roadway. A preliminary investigation determined that 39-year-old Carl Neill, of Grants Pass, was driving within the speed limit in his 2011 GMC pickup north on Hamilton Lane when he crested the hill and saw something in the middle of the roadway. He then realized it was a person and tried to avoid hitting her, but was unable to, the release said. OSP was assisted by Rural Metro Fire and Rescue, Josephine County District Attorney's Office and the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. Neill is cooperating with the investigation and no criminal charges are anticipated, the release said.
