Phyllis Joy DeBoer Hirons Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Aug. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Phyllis Joy DeBoer Hirons August 28, 1941 - August 15, 2015 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die, and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26) Phyllis Joy DeBoer Hirons went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, August 15, 2015. Phyllis was born in Eugene to Walter and Bernice DeBoer as the second of six children on August 28, 1941. The family moved to Ashland in 1946, where her father started Lithia Motors, a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership. Phyllis graduated in 1959 from Ashland High School, and enjoyed debate (as the #1 State championship team) and playing saxophone and piano. She attended the University of Oregon and then Southern Oregon College. At age 19, Phyllis placed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior. In 1963, Phyllis married John Hirons in Ashland and moved back to Eugene where John worked in the family drugstore. Phyllis soon began to work in the business as well and learned about retail from her mother-in-law, Esther. Phyllis continued working as a retail buyer for more than 50 years. Some of Phyllis’ favorite times were meeting with sales representatives, listening to the stories of their lives, and sharing her faith in Jesus. Working at the family store gave her the unique opportunity to be an evangelist of God's merciful love to employees, sales representatives, customers, and even shoplifters. John and Phyllis welcomed their first child, Esther Michelle, in 1966. Their son, Stephen, was born in 1968 and grew up to become the third generation manager of Hirons Drug Stores. Daughter Rachel Inez completed the family when she was born in 1973. Phyllis was beloved by friends and family for her kind, sweet, and encouraging nature. She shared her deep faith in Jesus Christ to all she met. Phyllis believed that God reaches out to every person through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, to bring us into a close relationship with our loving God. She found great joy in her relationship with Jesus Christ, and reflected this joy to those around her. She had the privilege to volunteer for 28 years with Young Life, a Jesus-led ministry to middle school, high school, and college age youth. She spent many lunch hours at South Eugene High School, loving on kids and became a mentor to middle-schoolers at Roosevelt Middle School. Later, she was also privileged to become a children's leader in Bible Study Fellowship, a favorite international bible study that everyone would enjoy! She often said, what a blessing we have to study God’s Word. Phyllis says: "So for now, farewell. I hope you will join me and my friends in heaven for an eternal party with Jesus. The way is 1 Corinthians 15." Phyllis is survived by her husband, three children, and six grand-children: Sophia, Jack, Samantha, Adelaide, Caleb, and Henry. She is also survived by three brothers, Sid, Bob, and Alan, and two sisters, Nancy and Janice. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 3:30pm at First Baptist Church in Eugene. Remembrances may be made in her name to Eugene Young Life or World Vision MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM You may leave your condolences or share memories by signing the Guest Book here » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
